Don't be fooled by my clever title. My post today will not be about a rad, new, exciting workout, but merely what to do for exercise when sick.
I apologize if I disappointed.
As some of you may have seen on my Facebook, I have been nonstop sick since the last few days of January. I've had everything from a heavy cough to headaches which prevented me from standing. And let's not forget the night I spent on the bathroom floor!
Of course, I have had a few days in which I've felt better and have been able to perform necessary functions, and I am very thankful for those days.
I don't always recommend going to the gym when sick. It's like I've said a dozen times, listen to your body. If you don't think you should go, don't go. But if you feel better than you did yesterday, here's my "getting over a sickness" gym routine:
-Cardio: I dont recommend running for those with headaches (yikes). But for those who still want those miles, try walking on the treadmill at an incline & at a fast pace. After some time there, try the elliptical. There are a few different types of ellipticals that do different things, so switch it up!
-Weights: I tend to stay away from weights when sick just because I feel like it gives me a headache. However, weights are still important. I love the "Circuit Room" when I'm not exactly feeling up to a weights day. A Circuit Room is an area with a few machines (normally 6-12) that you only use for 30seconds to a minute at a time. You rotate the room how ever many times you choose. I love this room when I'm sick because there's not too much pressure or strain, but you're still working your muscles.
-Mat Work**: If I end up doing any mat work when sick, it's just a few abs exercises. I don't want to overwork my body or make it any more sore than it already is.
In the end, focus on getting yourself back to feeling well first. Don't worry about a day or two you missed from the gym. Drink lots of water, ingest lots of Vitamin C, and take 2 Immuno Shield pills 3 times a day (you're welcome).
**"Mat Work" is my name for exercises you would perform on the floor. These are usually crunches, pushups, squats, etc.
